Do we need a routine?

Question I started my first day of homeschooling today. We did an hour of history and an hour of English. My son said to me you are worse than my teachers at school. Can you give me some guidance, do I need to set a routine, do lessons need to be an hour long, do I need to set a timetable. I am feeling a bit overwhelmed. Please can you give me any help?

Answer

Most new homeschoolers try to recreate the institutional school at home. That isn’t what homeschooling is about. You need to look at why you pulled your child out of school? What are the reasons for being at home? Homeschooling is more about living life, which includes education, the joy of learning. You will need to “de-school” for a bit. You are overwhelmed because you are trying to replicate school. An hour of history on your first day is quite intense, especially if this is not your son's favourite. Start of by finding out what he wants to learn about, find different methods that work with him, be that reading, acting, colouring, or whatever it may be. Then move on to topics you find important and want him to study using the methods you found to work.
